Sign language has always held a special place in my heart. I first learned sign language in high school and continued learning it in college, and it became something I genuinely loved.
One of the things that made the biggest difference for me was having the opportunity to learn from both a hearing teacher and a Deaf teacher.
My high school sign language teacher was hearing, and she taught me so much. But when I got to college and had a Deaf teacher, something just clicked. Having someone who was a native signer teach me gave me a completely different experience. I wasn't just learning signs from someone who could speak English and explain them to me, I felt like I was actually being immersed in the language and culture.
I also had a customer service job where I met a few deaf customers who became regulars. I remember one man in particular who even brought his wife in one day just to introduce me to her in sign language. I thought that was so sweet, it's one of those little moments that has stayed with me.
Those experiences are a big part of why creating this Peace Sign Language Tee felt special to me.
